What are Temporomandibular Disorders?

Temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscle disorders, commonly called "TMJ" disorders or TMD are a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. The TM joints are where the upper and lower jaw meet in front of your ears.  These joints are used more than any other joint in your body (talking, eating, swallowing)

Signs and symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction (TMD):

A variety of symptoms may be linked to TMJ disorders. Pain, particularly in the chewing muscles and/or jaw joint, is the most common symptom.  Other symptoms include:

TMJ dysfunction may be associated with clenching and grinding of the teeth. It may also result from trauma such as a motor vehicle accident or whiplash injury. It may also occur spontaneously.
